9 Days: Rome & the Amalfi Coast

Eternal City history meets stunning cliffside villages, beaches, and Mediterranean sea views.

Trip Snapshot
This 9 day itinerary works beautifully from May to October when the sea stays warm and the weather feels perfect for both city exploring and coastal relaxation. Budget level sits at mid to upper mid-range $ because coastal hotels and boat rides add a bit to the cost. Ideal for couples seeking romance, solo travelers who love beauty, or families who want a good mix of history and beach time.

Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1. Arrive in Rome and settle into your hotel. Take it easy after the flight and walk to the Trevi Fountain in the evening to toss a coin for good luck. Enjoy your first Italian pasta dinner at a nearby trattoria.

Day 2. Start early at the Colosseum with skip-the-line tickets booked in advance. Continue to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. In the afternoon relax with gelato while wandering near the Pantheon.

Day 3. Visit the Vatican Museums and St Peters Basilica in the morning. Take comfortable shoes because there is a lot of walking. Spend the evening in the lively Trastevere neighborhood with its narrow streets and good restaurants.

Day 4. Take the high-speed train from Rome to Naples, then transfer to a regional train or private transfer to your base on the Amalfi Coast. The total journey takes around three to four hours. When you arrive breathe in that fresh sea air and enjoy the views.

Day 5. Explore Positano with its colorful houses stacked on the cliffs. Walk down to the beach for a swim if the weather allows and have lunch with sea views. In the evening stroll along the pretty lanes.

Day 6. Take a boat trip to Capri for the day. Visit the Blue Grotto if conditions allow and enjoy the island atmosphere. Return to the mainland in the late afternoon.

Day 7. Spend the day in Amalfi town and visit the historic cathedral. Walk the coastal path toward Atrani for beautiful views or simply relax on the beach with a good book.

Day 8. Free day for more beach time, hiking the Path of the Gods if you feel energetic, or just enjoying lemon-scented terraces and fresh seafood.

Day 9. Depending on your flight time take the train back toward Rome or Naples airport. Use the morning for one last coffee with sea views before saying goodbye to the coast.

Must-see & Nice-to-have
Must-see spots you really shouldnt miss include the Colosseum and Vatican in Rome plus Positano and the boat ride to Capri on the Amalfi Coast. These give you the perfect balance of ancient history and Mediterranean beauty.

Nice-to-have if time allows cover the Pantheon, Trastevere at night, Amalfi cathedral, a swim in the sea, the Path of the Gods hike, and relaxed village walks.

Where to Stay
In Rome choose the historic center near the Pantheon or the safe and lively Trastevere area. On the Amalfi Coast stay in Positano or Amalfi town itself. Look for hotels or apartments with sea views, they make the stay feel special even if they cost a little more. Both places feel safe and stay well connected for day trips.

How to Get Around
Inside Rome walking and the metro work best. The train from Rome to Naples is fast and easy, then you switch to a slower regional train or use a private transfer to reach the Amalfi Coast. On the coast boats become the most scenic way to move between villages while buses run along the winding road if you prefer to stay on land.

Comfort Tips
Bring the right power adapter for Italian sockets so your phone and camera stay charged. Credit cards work almost everywhere but carry some cash for beach cafes and small boats. Italian portion sizes feel more reasonable than American ones so you might want a second course or extra bread. Locals speak softer in public spaces, many shops close on Sunday afternoon, and hotels keep quiet hours after 10 pm. These small details help everything run smoother and make your trip more relaxing.
